David Hume - Lake Argyle Paintings

home

"Lake Argyle, in the Kimberley region of north-western Australia, covers nine times the area of Sydney Harbour. This artificial lake was created when the Ord River was dammed in 1972. It is a vast and beautiful lake set in magnificent country. What has stayed with me, along with memories of the power and beauty of this place, is the way it seems to exemplify aspects of Australians' recent involvement with the land.  Near the dam wall an old homestead has been moved from its original location and rebuilt to save it from flooding; as if to say that in covering two thousand square kilometres of ancient land with water, one artefact of recent pastoral activity is all that was worth saving."
